This year, our Performing Diaspora conference component will take place on May 25th, 2013, and will be a day long event hosted by York University. The conference will include two panel sessions and two roundtable sessions, each of which will consider the histories and developments of Urban Music (particularly Hip Hop) specifically within the greater Toronto area, and the degree to which this new form of music-making was accepted and integrated into the already existing Toronto music infrastructure of the post-WWII era. These panels will also pay particular attention to the development of the Urban Music genre in relation to Canadian culture at large, concepts of multiculturalism and diaspora, and notions of “performing blackness”.
We are currently looking for academic papers that focus on the above subject matter. If you are interested in submitting, please visit our “CFP” tab on this website for additional information. Submissions should be addressed to Francesca D’Amico, Performing Diaspora Curator at: firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for abstract submissions is February 1st, 2013.
