On February 4th 2013, Performing Diaspora will kick off its 2013 season with a film series titled “Contemporary Griot” at York University in Toronto, Canada. The event will feature a film presentation, panel discussion, performances and a keynote address. One of the featured films presented that evening will be, “In Between Stories,” a short documentary featuring four African Canadian artists from Toronto who navigate through the different narratives that make up their lives and share what it means to be a young African in today’s society. The documentary, directed by Roda Siad as part of her master’s thesis requirement at Ryerson University, touches on the issues of media representations of Africa, the experiences of second-generation immigrant youth in Toronto, and the role of storytelling.
Following the screening, Performing Diaspora will feature a panel discussion with the documentary’s director Roda Siad, as well as the film’s other featured artists: Yusra Khogali, Tendisai Cromwell, Lelu Angwenyi and Kae Sun. Following the panel discussion will be a performance by Ghanaian-Canadian singer-songwriter Kae Sun (http://www.kaesunmusic.com/) and gutarist Jeff Gunn.
